The RuhrRiders Community- From the Strava Club to the Greipel conqueror on Zwift
It all started in the deepest RuhrPott. “RuhrRiders, cool name right? Let’s found a Strava Club! ”. The words sounded like this, or something like that, when Thomas Jendrusch founded a small but nice cycling community with some crazy cyclists.
Meetings were made regularly, more and more RuhrRiders came and then came the day when Thomas was completely confused.
“Thorsten, are you in the South Seas?”
Who knows it too? You take a look at Strava and want to hand out a few kudos and see an activity in the other hemisphere. Nowadays the reason is well known, but probably everyone was a little irritated the first time. The misunderstanding quickly disappeared and the RuhrRiders path from analog cycling to the virtual world of Zwift was paved.
On June 23, 2015 the first RuhrRiders Avatar saw the light of day on Watopia. Still without the RuhrRiders jersey but of course with a lot of steam in the thighs. Thomas was quickly enthusiastic about the connection between offline cycling and the digital cycling platform Zwift. That excitement is contagious, as we know. The first drivers Thomas was able to lure onto the role were Ingo (the machine) and the Olinator.
The next chapter followed in late autumn 2016. The Tour de Zwift was a live guest at Edelhelfer in Recklinghausen. Thomas won the traditional KOM hunt and this was followed by an exciting conversation with Steve Backett, the then Marketing / PR Head of Zwift. Steve already knew the RuhrRiders and in the following time there was a lot of contact and a close exchange. Among other things, Thomas helped with the translation in the game and the iOS app.
In the near future, the legendary RuhrRiders group ride started. With the RuhrRiders legend, the Olinator. For many Zwifters, no longer imaginable today, the drivers had to meet and meet at the banner to drive off together. Really old school and thank goodness a long time ago.
